So tonight I had an interesting conversation with Katie, my queenside rook, while I was at the Royal Key. She is about 2 and a half hours north of me, so it was via text.
Me: Ironically last night after you told me not to hit on 18 year olds, the band started playing "Your Love" then when I hit the bar I walked in on that same song. As in "you know I like my girls a little bit older, I don't want to lose yout love tnight" a song about spending the night with a girl who is too young ;)
Katie: lol, that's funny
Me: My life is blessed with such ironies.
They just played that bloody song again!
Katie: It's your theme song I suppose
Me: Sure. Could be. but me and a younger woman? Never
Katie: Your sense of humor always makes me giggle
Me: Lol, oh come now! The last gir I was hitting on was 18!
Oh wait, how old am I again?
Katie: Not 18.
My life is just hillarious. These ironies do tend to follow me around and I swear that my life reads like a novel. This was comical because I do tend to date younger women, in fact the only woman I had ever dated, before I was married, that was older than me became my wife. And that worked out so well that I tend to avoid older women. although in the past couple years I have gone out with women much older than myself.
And while I was hitting on a woman that was 18 recently (the photographer) the last woman that I was deeply interested in was the youngest I have ever dated, twenty-one. Still plenty young for me, at thirty.
And the song is about him cheating on "Josie" with a young woman. It may very well be my theme song.

The rooks
The rooks sit at the four corners of the chessboard like silent sentinels. Their piece is represented as a stone tower, further giving the impression of steadfast, resolute strength.
Way back in the early Indian version of Chess the rook was actually representative of chariots. Moving in long straight lines to wreck havoc upon the enemy ranks.
In my life the kingside rook was easy to identify, this is my best friend Alex.
He has always been a pillar of strength, and the one person in this world that fully understood me and my crazier mannerisms. He is down to earth, compassionate, intelligent and understanding. This is not a side of him reserved for those that know him well, this is the face he shows everyone. It is simply who he is.
The rook on my queenside is Katie. Alex is my best friend, and Katie is number two. She has always been someone that I could meet on an intellectual level. I would drive 2 and a half hours just to be able to sit and chat with her over coffee. I adore her on so many levels.
These two are the pillars that hold up either side of my board. They are strong towers as well as powerful chariots. I trust them and love them, my life would be dramatically different if not for them.

Chess is Life
This quote comes from Bobby Fischer. "Chess is life."
I've been rereading The Eight by Katherine Neville and it is a wonderful, deep book. It keeps me thinking with every page. But tonight I am thinking about chess and my life.
If my life were a chess match, who would occupy this board with me? And what piece would they represent?
Some of the pieces have already been removed from the board, some of the pieces have no one to represent them, and some of the pawns are just waiting to enter enemy territory and be transfigured. But here are some of the pieces. For the sake of the book, I am playing black.
Black King: Only way this allusion works is for that to be me. It fits with my pen name, Xiao Wang, the Diminutive King.
Black Queen: Has been removed from the board. Perhaps a pawn will clear the board. "Be ye transfigured!"
Kingside Bishop: This is Vlad. No doubt on that one, but Vlad will be surprised.
Kingside Knight: This is John. Somehow I think he will be pleased with this distinction.
Kingside Rook: Alex, this can only be you.
Queenside Bishop: I think this is my sister, Elisa.
Queenside Knight: This is Breckany, this was always Breckany, and I was silly not to see it sooner.
Queenside Rook: This must be Katie. She and my sister Elisa may be switched in the wrong positions.
Pawns: I won't name you, some of you know who you are. "Pawns are the heart of chess." It's not a dismissive statement to name you a pawn, I can't make it without you.
